A look at E3
So today marks the first day of the 2013 E3 convention. For those who don't know, E3 is the gaming convention where all the big video game companies come from miles around to show off their biggest games of the next year and this year will see the next gen systems including the Playstation 4 and the X-Box One.
Being mostly a Nintendo guy, I'm mostly interesting to see what Nintendo will unveil. With the Wii U around eight months old, the time has finally come where Nintendo is ready to unleash some heavyweights including a new Mario game (similar to Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy), Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and Pikmin 3. They also apparently plan to showcase The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for the portable 3DS. After a rough 8 months due to a lack of depth, it's nice to see Nintendo unleashing a lot of firepower for the Wii U and giving us some great gems for the 3DS.
Sega will be displaying Sonic: Lost World for the Wii U and 3DS which is another game I'm interesting in. The Sonic franchise had a rough last decade but has made a nice comeback with the decent Sonic Colors and the really fun Sonic Generations games over the last 2-3 years.
Warner Bros. will be showing Batman: Arkham Origins for the Wii U, Playstation 3, and X-Box 360. The game will serve as a prequel to the incredible Arkham games (Arkham Asylum and Arkham City). I am a little nervous for this one since Rocksteady Studios won't be returning as developers for this game.
Square Enix will unveil Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII which will be the conclusion of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. They'll also apparently be showing another untitled Final Fantasy game. I'll be honest, the first FFXIII didn't do it for me but it wasn't bad and once I play FFXIII-2, I'll be interested in Lightning Returns.
Konami will be showing Castlevania: Lord of Shadows 2 which should be released on the Playstation 3 and X-Box 360. I enjoyed the first LOS so I'm looking forward to this one.
The X-Box One will be shown and Microsoft better have a good showing cause I and many other aren't excited for it giving it's limitations (not being able to play used games, no backward compatibility, and being forced to play online at all times).
And of course, the one everyone has been waiting for: The first look at the Playstation 4. While not much is known, the PS4 could see the Playstation return to #1 in consoles after losing it's way with the PS3. Like most new systems, I'll wait till next year when most of the good stuff comes out.

Good summation, Ry. I don't think it's so clear cut with the used game thing for X-Box One. I didn't know about all those great Nintendo games; definitely more excited for Nintendo's presentation, although I heard they wouldn't be at E3 this year. Perhaps that was just a rumor or perhaps they changed their minds.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think PS3 will be the eventual winner this console generation. They seem way ahead of the pack and between the lame information coming out of the Microsoft camp for their console, and the weak tech that'll ball and chain third party Nintendo developers (not to mention Nintendo themselves - I want to see a Zelda or Mario game that ISN'T hampered by the lack of horsepower Nintendo always seems to bring to the table). Also, ANOTHER gimmicky Nintendo controller is not very appetizing for me and many others; I do believe it's better than the Wiimote but it looks cumbersome and apparently the pro controller will not (surprise!) support many of their top games.
If not for their prized, legendary first party franchises, Nintendo would be done by now.
