ROH The Era of Honor Begins: Where Are They Now?

ROH The Era of Honor Begins: Where Are They Now?
February 27, 2022
By Ryan Porzl

2001 was a dark time in the American wrestling scene as the WWF was left the only major game in the country after buying WCW while ECW finally fell into bankruptcy. In the aftermath, many promotions began popping up like Main Event Championship Wrestling, the X Wrestling Federation, and World Wrestling All-Stars. However, these promotions, for one reason or another, failed and faded away, almost as quickly as they came. Then in 2002, two promotions would make their start. One was Total Nonstop Action (TNA) and the other would be Ring of Honor (ROH). Founded in February 2002, ROH was originally to not only fill the void in wrestling but also hold events for RF Video to sell their merchandise after ECW closed. Originally a DVD promotion, ROH quickly became the darling of the hardcore wrestling fans who focused on workrate and matches instead of over the top presentation and the cartoonish side of wrestling. While ROH has spent it's history as either the third or fourth top promotion in America, it's made it's mark as an option for fans that tired of the WWE and would be responsible for launching or enhancing the careers of many legends, some of which still wrestle to this day. With February 23rd being the 20th Anniversary of ROH's first event which was The Era of Honor Begins, we will close our look back at ROH history for the month of February by looking back at the participants and key players of that event and see where they are now.

Continuing our 20th celebration of Ring of Honor, we now move to the second of three articles. In the last article, we looked back at the famous names most people know of but either didn't know or forgot they ever held an ROH championship. In this article, we'll look at different champions. With a promotion that has been around as long as ROH has, not every champion can be memorable or legendary. Sadly, there are those that become forgotten to history and are only remembered from past footage or title history pages on wikipedia. In this article, we'll take a look back at the most forgotten champions in Ring of Honor history.

2022 will be a big year in the wrestling business as many companies, past and present, will be celebrating huge anniversaries so I will be doing many of these lists for promotions like ROH, New Japan, ECW, Impact, and All Japan this year. This February will mark 20 years for Ring of Honor, a great milestone. This will be the first of a series of articles coming up that will celebrate ROH. In this article, we will continue my series of articles of wrestlers who you didn't know or forgot held a title. Obviously, ROH has a rich history with the likes of Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, Jay Lethal, Kevin Owens (Steen), Bryan Danielson, Nigel McGuinness, and CM Punk but there's so many more where that came from and we'll take a look at them.
