On New Years Day 2024, AEW celebrated their fifth year anniversary. Since it's launch in 2019, it has exceeded expectations in many ways and has had their share of success. Like any promotion, they've had their ups and downs. Perhaps, the promotion's biggest downs is their inability to build new stars to eventually replace the guys who have been on top the last five years and are getting older. Now, we're five years into AEW and despite that along with having nearly 200 wrestlers on the roster with Tony Khan having no plans to slow down anytime soon, the clock is ticking for AEW to build new stars and while the promotion won't go under anytime soon, it can affect their bottom line big time. Not to mention, it creates an atmosphere where young wrestlers will feel AEW isn't the place to become a star. 2021 was a huge year for AEW as they won the Wednesday Night Wars against NXT, debuted B-show Rampage, and even scored some demo victories over WWE. Along the way, the promotion also had it's share of champions from top acts like Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks, and The Lucha Bros to new blood like Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin, Hikaru Shida, Britt Baker, and "Hangman" Adam Page. 2022 will no doubt be another big year and will have several memorable champions. Who they will be is anyone's guess but I have suggestions as to who should gain AEW gold in 2022 and we'll take a look at those names. Keep in mind, I'm not familiar with contract situations, possible injuries, and possible newcomers so anything can happen beyond our control.

Whether you love them or hate them, AEW has been the toast of the American wrestling scene since they launched on New Years Day 2019. Not only have they quickly catapulted to the number two promotion in America but their weekly television show Dynamite has regularly beat NXT in the ratings. It's not just the fans as wrestlers from miles around have made the pilgrimage to AEW. Unfortunately, with so many wrestlers coming into the new promotion, many will overachieve while others, for whatever reason, fall through the cracks. In this article, we'll look at the wrestlers who originally came into AEW with promise but for some reason, it hasn't worked out and they've struggled to find their footing for a variety of reasons be it booking, bad luck, or the coronavirus.
