Super
Towns On The Superstation was a special that aired on NWA's World
Championship Wrestling program. The show saw big matches taped around
the country while the event was hosted by Tony Schiavone and David
Crockett in the studio. The main selling point of the show was an
interview with Magnum TA which was his first since his career was
ended in a car accident on October 14, 1986.
We start with someone driving a car while the following text appears:

Barry
Windham vs. Arn Anderson-
From January 10, 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Windham was one
half of the NWA United States Tag Team Champions with Ron Garvin
while quickly becoming one of the biggest prospects in wrestling at
this point. Meanwhile, Anderson is nearly in a transition as he's
still with the Minnesota Wrecking Crew but Ole won't be in the
Horsemen much longer so the MWC will break up.
Trash
talking to start until Anderson knees the stomach and throws some
punches to it. Anderson whips Windham to the ropes, drops his head
too early, Windham comes off the ropes with a leapfrog, and catches
Anderson turning around with a dropkick to a pop. Windham hits
another and Anderson bails out to regroup and take his jacket off.
Back in, they circle and tie up with Anderson getting a side headlock
before transitioning into a hammerlock. Windham reverses with his own
hammerlock. Anderson gets a drop toe hold and transitions to a side
headlock but Windham gets out with a belly to back suplex. They tease
a lock up but Anderson kicks the stomach, gets an arm wringer, and
jerks the arm repeatedly. Anderson gets another arm wringer and jerks
the arm some more. Anderson gets an armbar. Windham tries to armdrag
out but Anderson holds on. Windham gets up and gets his own arm
wringer followed by hitting some elbows to the arm. Windham gets an
armbar.
Anderson
gets up and muscles Windham to the corner. Anderson knees the stomach
and forearms the back. Anderson whips Windham to another corner but
misses the charge. Windham gets some more NWA/WCW armwork with the
armdrag followed by an armbar. Windham drops some knees to the ribs
and applies the armbar. Anderson gets up but Windham gets an arm
wringer which drops Anderson to his knees and applies the armbar.
Anderson gets up, whips Windham to the ropes, catches him with a drop
toe hold, and attempts a side headlock but Windham counters with a
hammerlock. Windham drops some knees as we go to commercial. We're
back with Anderson applying a steiner recliner. Windham gets up and
runs Anderson back first into the corner before falling to the
canvas. Windham recovers first and hits an elbow. Windham hits a
bodyslam and climbs the top turnbuckle but misses the diving elbow.
Anderson
covers for 2. Anderson wraps the arm around his leg and grabs the
ropes for added leverage. Windham eventually gets up and Anderson
gets an arm wringer. Windham gets up and punches out. Anderson whips
Windham to the ropes and catches him with an elbow that sends Windham
over and out to the floor before crashing into the guardrail.
Anderson taunts the fans before heading out and ramming Windham into
the guardrail. Anderson heads back in to taunt some more. Windham
makes it back to the apron where Anderson hangs him on the ropes and
forearms the chest twice before suplexing him back in the ring for 2.
Anderson works over the body. Anderson whips Windham to the ropes,
misses an elbow, Windham comes off the ropes, and Anderson catches
him with a spinebuster for 2. Anderson covers again for 2. Anderson
attempts a gordbuster but Windham counters with a suplex and both are
down.
Both
get up and drop each other with punches. Both are up again with
Windham hitting a back elbow. Anderson punches at air and Windham
follows with kicks to the stomach and punches which drop Anderson.
Windham hits a punch and a european uppercut. Windham whips Anderson
to the ropes and catches him with a back elbow for 2. Windham whips
Anderson to the ropes and catches him with a sleeper but Anderson
snapmares Windham to the outside through the ropes. Windham makes it
back to the apron but Anderson knocks him off with punches. Referee
Earl Hebner tries to separate them. Windham comes back by getting on
the apron, catching Anderson getting near with a shoulder block to
the stomach, and gets a slingshot sunset flip back in for the win in
15:05. After the match, Anderson jumps Windham and hits a gordbuster.
Thoughts:
* Alright but extremely disappointing given the wrestlers involved.
It started fine but once the arm work began, I lost interest. I don't
mind arm work here and there but NWA/WCW overused it and it never
meant anything. It did pick up in the end but not enough to get it
past alright status.

Brad
Armstrong vs. Jimmy Garvin (w/Precious)-
From January 24, 1987 in Washington D.C.. Oh joy, cause this match
was so exciting at Starrcade '86. Anyway, these two previously met at
Starrcade the previous November and went to a draw.
The
circle and tie up to start with Armstrong muscling Garvin to the
ropes before breaking. Another tie
up and Garvin muscles Armstrong to
the ropes before breaking. Another tie up with Garvin getting a
waistlock takedown but Armstrong gets out. They tie up again with
Garvin getting a takedown and a leglock. Garvin tries to taunt the
crowd in the hold but the crickets don't even bother to chirp.
Armstrong reverses with his own leglock as we go to commercial. We're
back with Garvin applying a head scissor. Armstrong eventually
handstands out and gets a side headlock. Garvin quickly gets out and
grabs an arm but Armstrong gets the hammerlock. Armstrong drops the
knees on the arm and applies the hammerlock. Garvin gets to his knee
as Armstrong transitions to an arm wringer but Garvin shoulder blocks
the stomach. Garvin rams Armstrong to a corner and then another.
Garvin hits a hot shot and taunts the crowd but no one cares.
Garvin
gets a chinlock. Armstrong eventually gets up and elbows the stomach
to get out. Armstrong comes off the ropes with a shoulder block.
Armstrong comes off but Garvin gets up and catches him with a knee to
the stomach. Garvin stomps Armstrong and throws him to the outside.
Garvin taunts to again no reaction. Precious taunts Armstrong and
Garvin stomps Armstrong from the ring. Armstrong get up but Garvin
comes off the ropes with a stomp from the ring. Armstrong eventually
gets back in but Garvin whips Armstrong to the ropes and misses a
jumping knee before getting caught upside down in the corner.
Armstrong works over Garvin in the corner. Garvin begs off but
Armstrong biels him out of the corner. Armstrong hits a dropkick that
sends Garvin to another corner. Armstrong hits some mounted punches
in the corner. Armstrong whips Garvin to another corner and attempts
a monkey flip but Garvin sends him over and out to the floor giving
Armstrong the disqualification win at 8:19.
Thoughts:
DUD Boring and lousy. The crowd was completely dead and couldn't care
less. Armstrong is fine wrestler but blander than oatmeal while
Garvin is terrible. There was nothing to sink your teeth into here.

NWA
Central States Tag Team Championship: The MOD Squad (c) vs. The
Batten Twins-
From January 30, 1987 in St. Louis, Missouri. The Central States Tag
Belts are from the Central States Wrestling promotion from Kansas
City, Missouri. The MOD Squad consist of brothers Basher and Spike
who had the gimmick of motorcycle police officers. They mostly were a
journeyman team that had success in Memphis for Continental Wrestling
Association, Central States Wrestling, and Championship Wrestling
from Florida while making appearances for NWA/WCW. The Batten Twins
are twin brothers Bart and Brad who mostly achieved their biggest
success in CSW and for World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico holding
tag gold in both. They appeared in several promotions like the
Continental Wrestling Association, World Class Championship
Wrestling, and NWA/WCW.
Spike
and Bart start with a tie up and Spike gets a waistlock takedown.
Bart scrambles and gets his own waistlock but Spike reaches the
ropes. Tie up with Bart getting a schoolboy for 2. Tie up again with
Bart getting a side headlock. Spike keeps attempting the tag but Bart
keeps kicking his hand away. Basher eventually comes in but Bart
catches him with a head scissor and takes them both down to a pop.
Brad comes in and The Battens hit stereo dropkicks to send The MODs
out. Back in, Spike starts the NWA/WCW armwork with an arm wringer
and pulls Bart down by the hair. Tag to Basher who gets an arm
wringer. Bart counters with his own. Tag to Brad with The Battens
double team whipping Basher to the ropes and catching him with a back
body drop for 2. Brad continues the NWA/WCW armwork with an armdrag
into an armbar. Brad drops knees on the arm. Basher gets up, whips
Brad to the ropes, misses the elbow, and Brad comes off with a lousy
high crossbody that barely connects for 2.
Brad
gets the armdrag into an armbar. Brad knees the arm and pulls back.
Basher gets up and Bart tags in with Brad whipping Basher to the
ropes and both Battens hitting a double team back elbow for 2. Basher
bails to regroup as we go to commercial. We're back with Spike
whipping Bart to the ropes, drops down to the canvas, Bart jumps
over, comes off the ropes, and Spike catches him with a face slam.
Spike repeatedly rams Bart into the canvas and stomps him. Tag to
Basher who hits a double ax handle and rams Bart in the top
turnbuckle. Basher rams him again but Bart blocks a third and rams
Basher. Tag to Spike with Basher preventing the tag as Spike hits an
elbow drop on Bart. Spike hits a short arm clothesline for 2. Spike
hits a snapmare and a fist drop. Spike rams Bart into the top
turnbuckle. Tag to Basher who cheap shots Brad which brings Brad in
to distract the referee allowing The MODs to hit Bart with a double
team gutbuster.
Brad
chokes and then distracts the ref which allows Spike to get a punch
in from the apron. Basher stomps at Bart and drops an elbow on the
back of the head. Basher chokes Bart on the ropes which brings Brad
in but that distracts the ref which allows Spike to get some cheap
shots. Basher rams Bart into Spike's knee. Tag to Spike who gets a
kick, a snapmare, and applies a chinlock. Bart gets up and elbows the
stomach to get out. Bart comes off the ropes, Spike drops his head
too early, and Bart catches him with a backslide for 2. Spike drops
an elbow and then knees Bart. Spike rakes the eyes. Tag to Basher who
works over Bart. Basher whips him to the ropes but drops his head too
early and Bart comes off the ropes with a sunset flip for 2. Basher
drops an elbow then hits a bodyslam and another elbow drop for 2.
Basher tries to lift Bart but Bart gets a small package only for
Spike to break it at 2.
Tag to Spike who whips Bart to the ropes and both catch each other with clotheslines. Both are down. Tag to Basher and hot tag to Brad who comes it with a slingshot dropkick on Basher then hits Spike with a dropkick. Brad hits each with another dropkick. All four are in with The Battens whipping The MODs into each other. Spike tries to lift Brad but Brad gets out and gets an O'Connor roll for 2 as Basher breaks up the pin. Brad sends Basher out while Bart dropkicks Spike out. As the referee is with Bart, Brad tries to suplex Basher in but Spike trips Brad from the outside in a sloppy spot with Basher falling on top for the win to retain at 12:00.
Tag to Spike who whips Bart to the ropes and both catch each other with clotheslines. Both are down. Thoughts:
*1/2 Ok match with good teamwork from both teams and I like The MODs
heel beatdown and manipulating the referee. Biggest complaint is that
it was occasionally sloppy with Brad barely getting the crossbody
while the finish was a mess.
Back
in the studio with Schiavone and Crockett. They talk about The
Crockett Cup, that The Road Warriors were seeded at #1 last year and
won the whole thing and that Paul Jones wants his team of “Ravishing”
Rick Rude and “Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez to be #1 since they
are the NWA World Tag Team Champions.
We
get a promo from Jones, Rude, and Fernandez with Jones saying when
you talk about the Jim Crockett Memorial Cup, you talk about the most
prestigious thing in tag team competition. He says Rude and Fernandez
were not together last year so they aren't the defending champions.
He says there are teams who have pressure such as last year's winners
The Road Warriors and next is Rude and Fernandez. He says is next is
The Rock n' Roll Express because they feel they should be the
champions and finally, there's The Dream Team of Koloff and Rhodes.
He says his men are ready and why they are the world champions come
the Memorial Cup night. Rude says Jones is right as he and Fernandez
carry the World Tag Team Belts so to 99% of the population, they are
the number one team in the world. He says they'll prove it to the
other 1% in two nights who is the top tag team of all time, not this
year or next year but of all time. He tells Jones they'll have fun
knocking off the other teams like The Road Warriors as well as Dusty
and Nikita, The Rock n' Roll Express, and The Andersons. He then
tells Fernandez they'll have a better time with that cool $1 million
they'll take home. Fernandez says when you're explaining the ways of
life and when you are born to be a champion from the time he was a
kid and when you idolize someone, they have to be special and not a
loud mouth punk trying to impress somebody and calling himself
something he ain't. He says because he and Rude weren't a team for a
long time, that's why you get The Road Warriors as the Cup winners
while he had a different mind and a different way of life till Jones
straighten it out. He says when he and Rude come to town that people
better move over because when they travel down the road, it is
disastrous because when they come ahead of anybody, they'll show them
they are the R&R of professional wrestling, not Rock n' Roll or
Road Warriors. Fernandez says come the tournament time, they'll find
out this bull is for real and they deliver heavy metal, the world tag
team champions and always gonna be. Solid promo. Jones was alright,
Rude was the best, and Fernandez kind of rambled. Nevertheless, I did
like putting this here to hype the tag team champions before The
Crockett Cup.
We
are back with Schiavone and Crockett in the studio
The
Rock n' Roll Express vs. Ivan Koloff and Vladmir Petrov- From
January 16, 1987 in Hollywood, Florida. The RnR are fresh off losing
the tag titles to Rude and Fernandez a month earlier. By this point,
The Russians were done for as Krusher Khruschev bolted to the WWF
around this time to replace Randy Colley as Smash in Demolition.
Petrov was one of many “Russian” characters during this era. I
can't find much on him but apparently he started wrestling in late
1986 and fizzled out by the summer of 1987 so he didn't last too
long. Apparently, he then had a few WWF tryout matches in the early
90s without the Russian gimmick but wasn't hired. With the gimmick
and being paired with Ivan, I wonder if the NWA was trying to
recreate the success they had with Nikita.
Gibson
and Petrov start with Gibson dodging Petrov before they tie up and
Petrov shoves Gibson. Tie up and Gibson gets a side headlock but
Petrov picks him up and throws him off. Petrov wants a test of
strength but Gibson is hesitant. Finally they do it and Petrov easily
sends Gibson to his knees. Gibson eventually gets up and Morton comes
in to hit the stomach to a pop. Petrov grabs Gibson from the RnR
corner with Gibson getting a side headlock. Petrov whips Gibson to
the ropes and catches him with a bearhug. Tag to Koloff who forarms
the back and rakes Gibson in the eyes. Gibson heads to the corner
where Koloff hits a forearm. Gibson comes back by reversing a whip to
another corner and catching Koloff coming out with a back body drop.
Gibson hits a dropkick and gets a side headlock. Tag to Morton with
Gibson exposing the chest and Morton punching it. Morton whips Koloff
to the ropes and catches him with a punch to the stomach.
Morton
gets a bodyslam and hits a fist drop. Morton gets an arm wringer. Tag
to Gibson who gets a single leg takedown and applies an overhead
wristlock. Koloff pulls the hair to get a head scissor but Gibson
escapes and gets an arm wringer. Tag to Morton who holds Koloff for
Gibson to hit. Morton gets a snapmare and applies a chinlock. Ivan
pulls the hair to get out, rakes the eyes, and rams Morton to the top
turnbuckle. Koloff whips Morton to another corner and charges but
Morton gets his feet up. Morton comes off the second turnbuckle with
a clothesline. Morton grabs the arm and tags Gibson who gets a
schoolboy for 2. Gibson gets a front facelock but Koloff makes it to
his corner and tags Petrov who hits a weak forarm to the back. Petrov
seems lost as hints at a whip but instead sends Gibson to the corner
and kicks him in the stomach. Petrov hits another weak forearm to the
back. Petrov hits a lousy pendulum backbreaker.
Petrov
whips Gibson to the ropes and catches him with an elbow. Petrov sends
Gibson to the corner. Tag to Koloff as Petrov knees the stomach.
Koloff and Petrov double team whip Gibson to the ropes and catch him
with a double team elbow. Koloff hits a backbreaker for 2. Koloff
kicks the back and applies a bearhug as the fans chant “Rock n'
Roll”. Gibson slowly gets to his corner but Koloff pulls the hair
as Petrov comes in to distract the referee. Morton then comes in but
is sent back after the referee sends Petrov back which allows for
double teaming in the Russian corner. Koloff hits a forearm to the
back. Gibson tries to fight back but Petrov tags in and knees the
stomach. Petrov hits a fisherman's suplex. Petrov whips Gibson to the
ropes and catches him with a bearhug with Gibson eventually getting
out with an ear clap but he winds up near The Russians corner. The
Russians double team until Morton comes in but he's sent back which
allows Koloff to choke Gibson with the tag rope while Petrov gets
some shots in.
Koloff
comes in despite not tagging, gets a snapmare, and comes off with a
leg drop for 2. Koloff whips Gibson to the ropes and catches him with
an elbow. Koloff sets Gibson on the ropes and comes off the other
side but misses the seated senton to a pop. Hot tag to Morton who
cleans house, whips Koloff to the ropes, and catches him with a back
body drop. Morton whips Koloff to the ropes and comes off the other
side with a high crossbody but Petrov breaks the pin at 2. Gibson
attacks Petrov but is sent back while Morton gets a sleeper hold on
Koloff. Meanwhile, Petrov gets the chain and nails Morton with it but
gets caught and The Rock n' Roll win by disqualification in 8:57.
After the match, we get a heel beatdown as they work over Gibson with
the chain. The Russians whip Morton to the ropes and clothesline him
with the chain. Petrov holds Morton for Koloff to whip with the chain
but Gibson comes back in to get the chain from Koloff and scares the
commies away.
Thoughts:
* Another alright match but nothing special. The RnR could do no
wrong back then and Koloff was solid as well. Petrov was obviously
the weak link as he was really green and his offense was mostly
limited and looked weak.
Back
in the studio with Schiavone and Crockett where they hype The
Crockett Cup.
We
get a Schiavone interview in Baltimore to hype The Crockett Cup.
Schiavone interviews promoter Gary Juster and Executive Director of
the Baltimore Arena Charles Neustadt. Many hardcore fans probably
heard of Juster as he not only was a promoter for NWA but I believe
he later worked for WCW and eventually worked for Ring of Honor
during the Sinclair ownership. Schiavone says excitement is building
to the event. Juster agrees and says Baltimore is thrilled to have
The Crockett Cup in Baltimore as they expect fans from around the
country and world and says it'll be a wonderful event. Schiavone says
there will be 24 teams and Juster is familiar with most. Juster says
he is and looks forward to The Road Warriors coming back to defend
the cup. Schiavone thanks Neustadt for hosting the Cup. Neustadt says
they're looking forward to a tremendous turnout not only locally but
around the country and overseas. He says it's a great event for the
city, for the downtown area and they look forward to hosting it.
Schiavone brings up the city and building undergoing a renovation and
asks Neustadt to talk about it. Neustadt says Baltimore having
problems 15-20 years ago but made a comeback in the last 10 years and
brings up the improvements of the building. Schiavone and Neustadt
talk about the sports in Baltimore. Ok segment. Nice bit to hype The
Crockett Cup.

NWA
World Television Championship: Tully Blanchard (c) (w/JJ Dillon) vs.
Dusty Rhodes-
From January 29, 1987 in Los Angeles, California. This is the
continuation of the Rhodes/Blanchard feud that's been going on and
off since '85. Blanchard is coming off beating Rhodes for the TV
Title at Starrcade 1986 two months earlier.
They
circle and Rhodes corners Blanchard and they tie up before Rhodes
hits a bionic elbow. Rhodes taunts and Blanchard charges but stop as
Rhodes positions for another bionic elbow. Tie up with Blanchard
muscling Rhodes to the corner and works him over with forearms to the
stomach. Rhodes sends Blanchard to the corner and works him over with
a chop and another bionic elbow. Rhodes another bionic elbow and then
repeatedly drops Blanchard with jabs. Blanchard bails to regroup with
Dillon. Back in, they tie up with Rhodes getting a side headlock with
Blanchard trying to fight out with elbows to the stomach as we go to
commercial. We're back as Dillon tries to pull Blanchard out but
Rhodes pulls both in and stomps Dillon. Rhodes then goes back and
forth giving Blanchard and Dillon bionic elbows till hitting a double
which knock both down to a pop. Blanchard begs in the corner until
Rhodes gets close and Blanchard pulls his trunks propelling Rhodes
into the top turnbuckle.
Blanchard
works over Rhodes and chokes him with his boot. Blanchard distracts
the referee allowing Dillon to choke Rhodes. Blanchard hits a
bodyslam and comes off the second turnbuckle with an elbow drop for
2. Another pin for 2. Blanchard drops an elbow and applies a chinlock
but Rhodes eventually gets out with a snapmare. Rhodes misses an
elbow drop and Blanchard covers for 2. Blanchard drops some knees and
works over Rhodes in the corner. Rhodes reverses a whip to another
corner but charges into a knee. Blanchard comes off the second
turnbuckle but Rhodes catches him and sends him into the corner for a
pop. Rhodes biels Blanchard out of the corner but Blanchard catches
Tommy Young who does his obligatory ref bump out of the ring.
Seriously, the slightest touch always sends Young out like he was
shot out of a cannon. Rhodes hits Blanchard's slingshot suplex on him
and covers but no ref. Dillon comes in but Rhodes takes him out.
Arn
Anderson comes in and jumps Rhodes before dropping an elbow on him.
Anderson heads out to revive Young as Blanchard covers but Windham
runs out to stop the count and explain what happens which brings
Anderson in and all hell breaks loose. Rhodes then schoolboys
Blanchard and Windham counts for some reason which obviously doesn't
count. The Horsemen take out Windham with Dillon's shoe which is
quite the WMD and throw Windham over and out. They then work over
Rhodes and bloody him until Windham comes back in for the save.
Rhodes is declared the winner by disqualification at 9:00.
Thoughts:
** A solid match but nothing special and they had better. Then again,
these two by this point could have a decent to a good match in their
sleep. The finish was messy but that of finish was common at the
time.
Schiavone
does a sit down interview with the returning Magnum TA. Schiavone
says he's talked about a lot of stuff in front of the camera for the
past three years but this may be the biggest moment of his career to
once again introduce Magnum TA. Magnum says it's great to be here and
one of the biggest moments of his life because of all the exciting
things to happen to him over the years and all the accomplishments,
to be sitting here with Schiavone talking about what's been going on
in the wrestling world is a miracle and great to be able to jump back
into mainstream wrestling. Schiavone says everywhere he goes, people
ask him how is Magnum doing and while he looks great, he wants Magnum
to tell him what it's like to be back. Magnum says it's been great
and a tremendous challenge. He says he's faced many physical
challenges, goals he wanted to achieve, and titles he's won but he
saw this tragedy, as some would call it, the biggest challenge of his
life because all of a sudden he had all of his physical capabilities
taken away from him and he felt helpless for a very short period of
time. Magnum says he realized the greatest thing we all have is our
mind and his mind was real sound. He says as long as you have your
mind and the strength that comes from within, you could accomplish
anything you set out to do. He says any goal that may seem impossible
and the experts can say the odds aren't in your favor but if your
mind is working, there's nothing you can't accomplish. Magnum says he
laid on a table with someone saying he had a million to one shot of
being a total quadriplegic but it never sunk in to him because of all
the brilliant surgeons, there's not one who can tell you how the mind
works or your spinal column or nervous system works or how it
rebuilds itself. He says he's got a friend named Shawn in the rehab
he's in and fighting the same thing but says he's got a little bit of
his body moving but that's how you start. Magnum says with this test,
he be able to have the ability to make himself better than he ever
dreamed and not because he'll be stronger or faster than everyone but
because his mind will be more disciplined than it's ever been.
Schiavone says the fans wrote and called and clearly are on Magnum's
side. Magnum says he doesn't look at them as fans but as one big
family as it's not just the United States but all over the world came
behind him during his greatest time of trouble and turmoil because
they felt he got everything that he fought for taken away from him.
He says it's like when he was down 3-0 against Nikita Koloff in the
best of seven series in that when things look bleak, you draw
strength from the people around you and your family. He says the only
limitations we have are what we put on ourselves and our minds.
Magnum believes that's the key to our success and that once you
harness the power in your brain, you can do just about anything.
Schiavone says sometimes we don't we have this inside us and asks
Magnum if he thought he had something like that to come back from his
accident. Magnum says he didn't go through a panic situation but that
he had a lot of time to reassess things if he would've done something
different. He says he still has goals he wants to accomplish in
professional wrestling and he'll accomplish them as there's no doubt
in his mind but he wants to give a message to the people out there
which is he feels there's a lot more he can talk to them about
besides wrestling and says there aren't many problems if you have
your family, your belief, working hard in what you're trying to
achieve, and what it's about being an American and this country.
Schiavone says a lot has happened since October. Magnum says a lot
has happened in wrestling like Nikita Koloff saw the light and thinks
he's a tremendous athlete but once he got rid of his prejudice for
America and saw it as the land of opportunity where he can be an
athlete, express yourself, and be whatever you want, he was able to
come out of that shell. He says there's nothing wrong with Russia or
the Russian people or any people but rather people want to tunnel
vision things and that's where you run into people with warped
thoughts and sick people. Magnum says Koloff is with Rhodes and doing
great stuff but looks forward to when he can stand in the ring with
them again. Schiavone asks if there's anything else to say. Magnum
says he thanks everyone and will enjoy the rest of these matches.
Nice inspirational interview and good to see Magnum back and in good
spirits despite his limitations which sharp eye viewers could see as
he never moves his right arm which he couldn't. As nice as it is, the
interview doesn't age the best as I'm sure there were many people who
saw it and thought Magnum was on the comeback trail and maybe even he
thought he fully recover but as history shown, it never happened and
he never returned to the ring. Still, for him to have the accident he
had and to survive and live on is still a feather in his cap.

NWA
World Heavyweight Championship/No Disqualification: Ric Flair (c) vs.
Nikita Koloff- From January 11, 1987 in Charlotte, North
Carolina. These two went at it at Starrcade 1986 and are no strangers
to each other.
Big
“Nikita” chant as they circle and tie up with Flair getting a
side headlock takedown but Koloff gets a head scissor to counter.
They get up and Koloff teases the russian sickle. Tie up with Flair
getting a side headlock before transitioning to a hammerlock but
Koloff counters with his own and then a wristlock. Flair muscles
Koloff to the ropes and hits some chops but obviously, Koloff no
sells. Flair bails and regroups. Back in, they lock up with one hand
and Koloff wins that test of strength. Flair sends Koloff to the
corner where he chops and tries to biel him but Koloff blocks, sends
Flair to the corner, and biels him out. Koloff then hits a bodyslams
and sets up for the sickle but Flair bails and heads to the back.
Referee Tommy Young heads out and they have a shoving contest while
Young admonishes Flair. Young heads back in while Flair regroups.
Back in, they tie up with Koloff getting a side headlock.
Flair
eventually punches the stomach, whips Koloff to the ropes, and Koloff
comes off the ropes with a shoulder block. Koloff comes off the
ropes, jumps over Flair, comes off the ropes, Flair tries to catch
him with a hip toss but Koloff blocks, and gets his own. Koloff gets
a bodyslam and comes off the ropes but misses the elbow drop. Flair
hits a piledriver but Koloff channels his inner Hawk and no sells it
with Flair begging in the corner to a big pop and bailing out to
regroup again. Back in, we go to commercial. We're back as Flair
misses a knee drop to a big pop and begs in the corner. Koloff
approaches and Flair tries to kick him but Koloff grabs the leg,
pulls him out of the corner, and drops him back first on the canvas.
Koloff drops some elbows on the leg and then applies the figure four.
Koloff gets a few nearfalls but Flair makes it to the ropes. For some
reason, Young physically makes Koloff break the hold even though it's
No DQ.
Flair
begs in the corner while Koloff shakes at his left arm. Koloff pulls
Flair back and drops him back first onto the canvas but misses the
elbow on the leg. Flair heads to the apron and tries to suplex Koloff
to the floor but Koloff blocks and suplexes Flair back in the ring to
a big pop but only for 2. Koloff attempts more pins but only gets 2.
Koloff fish hooks Flair but Flair gets up and rakes the eyes. Flair
heads out and pulls Koloff out with him. Flair tries to ram Koloff
into the post but Koloff blocks and rams Flair to a pop. Back in,
Koloff hits mounted punches in the corner and Flair does a flair flop
to a pop. Koloff whips Flair to a corner with Flair doing a flair
flip to the apron but falls on the apron. Flair catches Koloff with a
shoulder block and attempts a slingshot sunset flip but Koloff holds
the rope to block before reversing with mounted punches. Flair then
tries more chops but they have no effect. Flair begs in the corner
while Koloff taunts.
Flair
reverses a whip to another corner with Koloff coming out with a
russian sickle but Flair ducks and Tommy Young takes it which sees
him fly out of the ring. Flair headbutts the stomach and throws
Koloff over and to the apron. As Flair tries to regroup, Koloff
climbs the second turnbuckle and catches Flair turning around with a
second turnbuckle russian sickle to a big pop. Koloff covers but no
referee. Blanchard runs out and comes off the top turnbuckle with a
diving double ax handle on Koloff. Blanchard heads out to revive
Young as Flair covers but only gets 2 to a pop. Koloff reverses a
whip to the ropes, misses the clothesline, and Flair comes off the
ropes with a high crossbody with Koloff falling over and out while
Flair gets tangled on the ropes. Flair and Blanchard then double team
Koloff with both getting counted out in 15:00. After the match,
Rhodes comes out to even things and they take Flair and Blanchard out
with clotheslines in the ring. Rhodes then hands the belt to Koloff
to a big pop and they leave.
Thoughts:
**1/2 Best match on this show but that doesn't mean much and these
two had better. The crowd was definitely into it and by far the
hottest crowd of this special. The action was solid but I didn't get
the No DQ stip since they didn't use it till the end and at times
hurt the match like Tommy Young forcing Koloff to break up the figure
four when he technically can't. Finish was screwy but again, that was
common in 1980s NWA.

Scaffold
Match: The Road Warriors (w/Paul Ellering) vs. The Midnight Express
(w/Jim Cornette and Big Bubba Rogers)- From January 29, 1987
in Los Angeles, California. Another rematch from Starrcade 1986.
As
was the case with Starrcade, The Midnights take forever to get up
there. Cornette gets on the mic to try to have this match on the
ground but nothing. After an eternity, we finally get action as
Animal and Eaton pair up with Condrey and Hawk pair up. The Warriors
beat up the Midnights to start. Animal gets two face slams to the
scaffold on Eaton while Hawk works over Condrey, gets a mounted
choke, and a face slam of his own. Eaton throws powder at Animal and
stomps him. Eaton distracts Hawk allowing Condrey to throw powder
into his eyes. Eaton has Animal hanging on the scaffold while Condrey
gets a face slam on Hawk. Cornette throws his racket up to Eaton who
uses it before throwing it away for some reason. Eaton is busted open
as Condrey gets another face slam. Cornette throws his racket to
Condrey who hits Hawk a few times. Condrey tries to toss it to Eaton
but Animal gets it and beats on Eaton. Hawk makes the comeback on
Condrey. Hawk hits Condrey with a low blow while Eaton starts to
climb down and hang from the scaffold. Animal stomps the hands and
Eaton falls to the canvas but the camera misses it. Hawk and Condrey
hang under the scaffold but Hawk kicks away and Condrey falls with
the camera largely missing the fall giving The Warriors the win at
7:00.
Thoughts:
1/2* Boring match but there's not much to do with a scaffold match.
Again, this was done better at Starrcade. The action was obviously
limited and it took five minutes for this match to even start. This
would largely be it for Dennis Condrey as he would abruptly leave the
NWA out of no where by March without telling anyone in management or
even Cornette and Eaton eventually going to the AWA where he reformed
the Original Midnights with Randy Rose. As far as I know, Condrey has
never gone on record explaining why. The third version of the
Midnights with Stan Lane would be around by The Crockett Cup.
Back
in the studio with Schiavone and Crockett who close the show.
Final
Thoughts and Verdict
Super Towns On The Superstation is a very weak show even for an 80s TV special as not one match breaks the three star barrier, there's no title changes, or storyline advancements. Even worse, most of the matches were rematches from Starrcade '86 but none were as good and Starrcade '86 wasn't even a great show to begin with. The Magnum interview is nice and inspirational but again, doesn't age well since I think people held out hope Magnum would make a comeback when he ultimately never did. I can't recommend this show.
